MiMo has just wrapped up several months of recording sessions with members of the Association of Improvising Musicians (AIM Toronto http://www.aimtoronto.org/). This project, funded by the Ontario Arts Council, will result in a Lock Groove album to be utilized by DJ’s and performing electronic musicians across the globe. Utilizing the talents of AIM Toronto members, we hope to fuse the freedom of improvised music with the power and groove of electronic music. Stay tuned for updates on this important project as we head into the editing and mixing phase during the fall.

A Lock Groove record, a byproduct of the dance music/electronica music genre, is a specific type of vinyl album. Unlike a traditional LP record which consists of one groove that spirals from the outside edge in, a Lock Groove album consists of multiple tracks that do not spiral in. Each track, which for a 33 1/3 speed album would be 1.8 seconds in length, repeats indefinitely. Each lock groove can then be used by a DJ as a ‘backdrop’ or ‘canvas’ upon which other layers of music can be built. Our Lock Groove album will contain around 100 lock grooves. In essence, a Lock Groove album is ‘raw material’ for the creation of electronic music.

We are very proud to announce the release of our first sample library, Synare. Those of you who are fans of ’70’s and ’80’s rock know these sounds well. Just think of the funky electronic drums on hits by DEVO for instance. After over a year of meticulous work, we’ve released an exhaustive library of samples that extend the range of the Synare to enable bass, chromatic percussion, and classic synth sounds - all from an electronic instrument that was mainly used as a wacky tom-tom effect in the ’80’s. You can hear 10 audio samples of what we’ve created on our website’s Products page audio player: http://www.mimomusic.com/products.php. We look forward to hearing your comments!
